What is the stage gate process?

The stage gate process is a conceptual map which you can use to move an idea to launch and beyond. It can be seen as a blueprint for managing the new product development process to improve the effectiveness and efficiency.

The stages consist of different activities neccessary to generate information that will support decision-making about the new product. The gates are used as examination points where managers make continuation/”go” decisions if the project shows signals of success, or termination/”kill” decisions if the project shows signals of failure.

The information acquired during the stage is used to forecast the product’s potential performance. Once a go is given at the gates, essential resources commitments are made.
